When did you decide you wanted to be a plus model?
My previous passion was dance. I worked and trained at if for a major portion of my life. By the time I became a teenager it was obvious I wasn't built for ballet -- which I was fine with -- all around me girls were starving themselves to be the perfect ballerina.
That was when I found solace in jazz and modern dance, which had much more acceptance for difference in size, and was much more focused on athletic ability. It was about that time I realized how important it is for young women to have healthy role models.
In my early twenties I began my career as a dance teacher, hoping to do just that; however, it only lasted about two years do a bad injury.
Not knowing what I was going to do next to satisfy my lust for the spotlight... I sought out my next fix :-) I'd had people tell me I should think about plus size modeling, which I know is so cliche... don't most model's stories start that way?
So, I had a few photos taken by a photographer friend and I happened upon VenusDivas.com, where I learned how to setup a free online portfolio with musecube.com. So, I posted my pics and offers for trade work started coming in. I did my first shoot and realized that this is something I REALLY wanted to do -- I loved it! I, and those closest to me, embrace my curves... why shouldn't the world (wish I could insert a sinister laugh there)!
Who are your favorite curvy role models?
Sadly enough the picking's for curvy role models are pretty slim. It seems that most of the plus size women in the spotlight are constantly yo-yo dieting and the tabloids are insistent on focusing on their weight. This makes it hard for me to relate because there are those of us that embrace a healthy lifestyle, eat and exercise regularly, and just have to accept that the 'Powers that Be' built us this way.
For that reason I always admired Carre Otis and Emme; Carre because though she struggled (and we all do) she came around to accepting her natural body type and is absolutely beautiful, and of course Emme because it seems she always accepted herself.
If you could pick the perfect plus modeling campaign for yourself, whom would you want to work for?
Wow, that's a tough one! Personally... shoes, shoes, shoes! I love them. You can just call me the plus-size Carrie Bradshaw! I accidentally ran over one of my shoes last night when it fell out of my car door and I backed over it... she didn't suffer, it was a quick break. I'm holding services today :-)
All kidding aside, there are so many things I want to do, it would be impossible for me to pick a specific campaign. I love fashion, and nothing feels better than putting on clothes that fit perfectly, which for a plus size girl can be as difficult to find as a button down shirt that doesn't give everyone a peek at your boobies (lol)! I really want to try many different looks and styles, because I absolutely enjoy challenging my range.
What are your dreams, desires and goals as a plus model?
My first and foremost rule in life is to have fun at whatever it is I'm doing. And if I happen to help at least one person learn to embrace the beauty of the curves on a woman then it would be a double win situation for me!
